China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba is about to introduce its own smartphone by the end of July. The new Android-based Aliyun smartphone, which was manufactured in association with chipset supplier Nvidia and Chinese cell phone maker K-Touch, will feature e-commerce and cloud computing capabilities. The device features a Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core CPU, in-house Aliyun mobile OS, and a dedicated cloud button (using the “δΊ‘” character) that functions as a search button. It also offers a variety of apps developed by Alibaba such as Aliyun Notes, Ali Mail, and a dedicated app store.

The Aliyun phone will be curated by Alibaba’s subsidiary AliCloud, which focuses on cloud computing research. Despite Alibaba’s dominance in the Chinese market, venturing into the smartphone business would be a challenge, as it is dominated by Symbian-powered phones. The Aliyun is expected to cost about RMB 2,800 ($430).
